KATY, TX—When Daniel Wong arrived in America from the Portuguese Province of Macau, he carried no wealth or résumé. But in the span of just one day, he found the three gifts that would guide him through the foreign terrain: freedom, faith, and purpose.

“I saw the Statue of Liberty. I landed in Houston. And I was introduced to Jesus—all in 24 hours,” Wong said. “That day changed not just my future. It changed me.”

It’s a tale as old as the days of the New Testament; the moment Wong opened his heart to Jesus, his life unequivocally transformed. He now lives by the principle that Jesus leads, and he follows.

So, Wong followed Jesus down a road toward a successful engineering career, community service involvement and a fruitful family life.

He went on to earn a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Houston and a Master’s degree in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. He later co-founded Tolunay-Wong Engineers, Inc. (TWE), a firm that now employs over 400 people and serves clients across Texas in transportation, energy, and even aerospace.

But Wong sees his work as more than technical. It’s spiritual.

“My work has always been a ministry,” he said. “Ethics, excellence, service—these aren’t just business principles. They’re biblical ones. I’m accountable to God for how I lead, how I treat people, and how I build.”

Further, Wong holds the tenant of public service close to heart, giving back to the community that took him in. He has served three terms on the Sugar Land City Council, chaired the Texas Board of Professional Engineers, and currently helps shape the future of Texas students on the Higher Education Coordinating Board.

“Being a Christian in leadership isn’t about quoting verses,” he said. “It’s about living them—showing grace under pressure, standing firm in truth, and loving people well even when it’s hard.”

He also serves as an Elder at Fort Bend Community Church, where he supports spiritual formation and discipleship. He credits his church family and his quiet time in Scripture as anchors during times of pressure and decision-making.

Whether he’s guiding a $100 million infrastructure project or mentoring a young leader, Wong always starts his way in prayer.

“I ask God to lead every step,” he said. “I’ve learned that the most effective leadership starts with surrender.”

One of his favorite scripture verses, Colossians 3:23, reflects that mindset.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

That verse serves as a mantra for Wong, reminding him that leadership is not about control; it’s about calling.

Wong may be experiencing that calling. Word around Katy is that he’s a potential candidate for the November 2026 race for Fort Bend County Judge.

“If I do run, it won’t be to elevate my name. It’ll be to elevate Christ by serving with integrity,” Wong said. “If God opens the door, I’ll walk through it with faith.”

Whether or not Wong’s name will be on the ballot is yet to be determined. For now, Wong is focused on building what he describes as his “testimony.”

“The Lord has given me so much. If I can give back by serving people well, by building what honors Him, then I’m ready,” he said.

And for Wong, that’s the true measure of success: not just what you build, but who you follow while building it.
