Daniel Wong: Championing Education, Economic Growth, and Community in Fort Bend

Dr. Daniel Wong, former At-Large Sugar Land City Council Member and current member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, is focused on advancing workforce development and economic opportunity across Fort Bend County and Texas. His vision is to align higher education with the state’s economic needs, making the region more competitive and enhancing the quality of life for families and businesses alike.

“As part of the Coordinating Board, I work closely with the legislature, business leaders, and local civic partners to ensure higher education meets the demands of a fast-changing economy,” said Dr. Wong, who came to the area in the late 1970s to earn his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Houston. Today, he continues to serve the university as an adjunct engineering professor.

Dr. Wong founded Toulany Wong Engineers in the early 1990s and has been appointed to major state boards, including the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He holds Professional Engineering licenses in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, and has served on the boards of the UH Alumni Association, Greater Houston Partnership, and Fort Bend YMCA in Missouri City.

Deeply committed to education and local talent development, Dr. Wong supports expanding access to certificates and job training programs through institutions like Wharton County Junior College and Texas State Technical College. He emphasizes the need for affordable, flexible educational pathways tailored to communities across Fort Bend—from Katy and Fulshear to Stafford and Needville.

During his time on Sugar Land’s City Council, Dr. Wong worked with schools, colleges, and businesses to position Fort Bend as a hub for innovation and opportunity. “It’s about making sure every student, entrepreneur, and family has the resources and support to thrive,” he said.

With a lifelong passion for public service, Dr. Wong has been involved in numerous regional and statewide initiatives, including the Texas Municipal League, Houston-Galveston Council of Governments, Fort Bend Economic Development Council, and Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. He believes effective collaboration between government and the private sector is key to streamlining processes, reducing regulatory burdens, and fostering sustainable growth.

“I’ve seen how strong partnerships across sectors can transform communities,” said Wong. “From academia and business to local government and philanthropy, I’m dedicated to creating jobs, building equity, and delivering results.”

Alongside his wife Mei, Dr. Wong has raised a family rooted in Fort Bend values. With a smile toward the future, he remains committed to higher education, economic development, and community service as Fort Bend County continues to grow and lead.
