Daniel Wong – 2022 Houston Engineer of the Year

Dr. Daniel Wong, President and CEO of Tolunay-Wong Engineers, Inc., was honored as the 2022 Houston Engineer of the Year by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. A proud alumnus of the University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering, Dr. Wong holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and serves as an adjunct professor in the department.

At the awards gala, UH faculty praised Dr. Wong’s exceptional career, leadership, and dedication to both the engineering profession and his community. Originally from Macau, Dr. Wong came to Houston in the 1980s and completed his doctorate under Professor Cumaraswamy Vipulanandan. His dissertation earned the 1990 ASCE Texas Section’s John B. Hawley Award for best paper, and his academic work resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications.

Despite his success in research, Dr. Wong chose to pursue a path in industry, founding Tolunay-Wong Engineers, which now operates across Texas and Louisiana and employs hundreds throughout the Southern U.S. In addition to his corporate leadership, he has remained deeply committed to service—previously chairing the Texas Board of Professional Engineers (appointed by the Governor), serving on the boards of major civic organizations, and holding public office as an At-Large Council Member in Sugar Land.

His dedication to education continues through teaching and philanthropy. In 2020, he established the Honorable Daniel Wong Endowed Professorship in Civil Engineering at UH, awarded to his former advisor Dr. Vipulanandan. This gift reflects his lifelong commitment to academic excellence, mentorship, and giving back.

Dr. Wong exemplifies the intersection of engineering innovation, public service, and community leadership—making a lasting impact on Texas infrastructure, students, and future engineers alike.
